Design Under Sky on Finalist Team for Roger Williams Park Gateway

October 30, 2019

Design Under Sky as part of the team with inForm Studio (designers of PVD Pedestrian Bridge) have been announced as one of five finalists for the Roger Williams Park Gateway RFQ. Our proposal, which looks to make a neighborhood connection back to the vibrant and colorful area of Broad St., also includes a demonstrative urban garden that transforms from “urban to wild”.

The Providence Planning department is looking for public feedback. View ours and the other proposals here.

Design Under Sky Proposes Elevated Park for Fate of Crook Point Bascule Bridge

August 14, 2019

RIDOT has recently announced plans to tear down the Crook Point Bascule Bridge, a historic landmark on the Seekonk River in Providence. At a cost of $6mil, we have to wonder what are the possibilities of this icon. For me personally I have treasured memories of exploring the bridge late at night.

Since the area was cleared and the bike path now runs directly by it does require an action given its exposure and accessibility (chain-link is keeping no one off the bridge). We are imagining a post-industrial aesthetic, basic materials artfully crafted, with none of the glitz that is on the PVD River Ped Bridge. Just a simple well designed (and planted?) bridge with the potential for a pedestrian connection to East Providence.

The path could also continue to the East Side Railway Tunnel as an additional connecting feature in the future.

Thoughts?

We are thrilled to announce the official opening of Living Edge, the winning project of “Imagine Us Here”, a design challenge presented by Down City Design’s CityWorks Fellows in Spring 2019. Local residents, volunteers who helped plant trees, and city officials all gathered on July 11 at the site’s location on S. Water St. (just North of the new pedestrian bridge) to celebrate the official opening of the project.

You can learn more about the project on our site here.

The Shack Opens in Jewelry District Providence

November 15, 2017

“THE SHACK” is a new seafood shack/biergarten in the heart of former I-195 land, and adjacent to the Wexford Innovation Center under construction. A small transportable "shack" will be set in a garden of three distinct zones, diminishing in constructed materiality and recalling the coastal context of the project .

The project was designed in close collaboration with the Dune Brothers (the restaurant operators) Stay Silent PVD (Event Planners), JP Murton (Developing Partner), Fuss and O'neil Engineers, and the I-195 District Commission. More about the project here.
