PROVIDENCE | RI
Providence Gateway Park is an unsolicited proposal that looks to celebrate the historic importance of the Providence River and its evolution over time from naturally occurring salt marsh to industrial waterfront, and suggests that the time has come for a mutual civic/ecological/industrial hybrid be formed. The conceptual design links disconnected parks and public space with a unified language that proposes a true pedestrian corridor to re-imagined “fox-point”.
Planned dredging of the river will be used to create barrier islands at the mouth of the river, diverting storm surge into reclaimed “sponge” water-front parks and ecosystems. Park edges are designed to embrace rising waters and to relieve over-burdened storm-water systems. This is all in addition to providing multiple spaces for cultural events that continuously bring people to enjoy the water’s edge.
